Mumbai : It took three-and-a-half hours for KEM hospital’s doctors to locate a needle that a 12-year-old girl accidentally swallowed. Doctors said she was extremely lucky that there was no damage as the needle had moved to the neck and chest region and could have pierced the heart or a lung.
While doctors tried to remove the needle, they realised that operation was the only option as the was not visible. The child was taken up for an emergency surgery with multi-specialty doctors being consulted.
The needle had perforated the food pipe and gone to the vertebra column.
For three-and-a-half hours, a team of six doctors — three from the ENT department and three from surgical gastroenterology department — patiently kept looking for the needle.
The girl was lucky that the needle had not pierced the heart or a lung.
“She is stable and recuperating,” the doctors reported.
