New Delhi, Jun 6: The Supreme Court on Tuesday permitted the Union of India to provide reservation in promotion for SC/ST employees as per law till the controversial issue was adjudicated by its constitution bench.
Headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and also comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, the vacation bench permitted the Centre to give promotion to Scheduled Castes /Scheduled Tribe employees but it did not clarify which law to follow.
The Centre had told the apex court that it was bound to give promotion to its employees. Promotion, it submitted, had virtually ground to a standstill after orders passed by various High Courts.
Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh told the bench that his government has to give promotion to its employees.
The Supreme Court observed, ‘We can say that you can go ahead with promotion as per law and we won’t mention what is law.’
