volcano Manila, Jan 16: Thousands of people fled their homes in the Philippines as a volcano spewed lava on Monday and volcanologists warned that the eruption could lead to a hazardous explosion within days.

A National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson told the new agency PNA that families have evacuated from the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan and Malilipo after a series of phreatic explosions by Mayon Volcano.

The NDRRMC spokesperson said the police and military are helping with the evacuation.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported pyroclastic flow, which contains fragments, ash and volcanic gas since Saturday.

Volcanologist Paul Alanis at the institute said that the continuing flow of magma or molten rock from Mayon’s crater and occurrence of earthquakes in the volcano are indicating the possibility of a hazardous eruption there.
