Rio Olympics : PV Sindhu wins badminton singles semifinals

pv sindhuIndia’s PV Sindhu defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 21-10 in the semifinals of the badminton women’s singles event at the Rio Olympics on Thursday to book her place in the gold medal match.

She is thus guaranteed of at least a silver medal, and will face Spain’s Carolina Marin, winner over 2012 winner Li Xuerui of China in the other semifinal, for the gold medal.

In wrestling, India’s Babita Kumari lost to Maria Prevolaraki of Greece in the women’s 53kg freestyle round of 16, the Greek proving too strong for the Indian and winning 5-1. Aditi Ashok is also competing in the second round of the women’s individual golf event.

Several medal matches are scheduled for Thursday, including in badminton and hockey. The finals of the men’s 200m, Usain Bolt’s pet event, will round off Thursday’s action in Rio.
