JALANDHAR: Gurdeep Singh, who was on death row in an Indonesian prison and was scheduled to face firing squad just past midnight has been spared for now. He called up his family in Nakodar in the morning on Friday and said that for now his execution had been put on hold.
Speaking to his nephew Gurpal Singh he told that it was just half an hour before the execution time that he was conveyed that he was being spared. “It is a last minute miracle,” he said and also told his family to profusely thanks the Government of India which made desperate efforts to save him. He also told the family that he would cal
up on Saturday also as he expected that he would returned to his cell.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also tweeted that Indian ambassador in Indonesia informed her that Gurdeep had not been executed.
His wife Kulwinder Kaur said that they wanted to meet Swaraj. “We know that she and her officials made very sincere efforts to save him and yesterday she even called me up twice to reassure that everything was being done to save him but we want to meet her to thanks her and to plead for my husband’s life who is a victim of the circumstances,” she said.
