rhino Eight rhino calves from Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, who were swept away in the floods, have been safely rescued so far, officials said on Thursday.

A team of Assam forest department and a mobile veterinary service team from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) have rescued eight baby rhinos aged between one month and a year in the last 2-3 days.

Rathin Barman, deputy director of the Wildlife Trust of India, which runs the CWRC, said that they had been coming across distressed calves of the famed one-horn rhinoceros in the flooded Brahmaputra every day.

Two of them were rescued during the day as field staff used boats to reach them and pull them out using ropes.

“They were found separated from their mothers after being washed away in the floods. We have rescued them and they are under treatment at our veterinary centre which is 5 km away from the main gate of the park,” Barman told PTI.
