maha minsMumbai: While students and parents organise state-wide protests to bring back the Maharashtra-Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET), which was made invalid by the Supreme Court for medical and dental courses, the education minister has appealed to parents to encourage their wards to prepare for phase II of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

Vinod Tawde further assured that help will be provided to aspirants in the form of free coaching through social networking sites, virtual classrooms and mobile applications. The MHT-CET was held on May 5, in which more than four lakh aspirants appeared for admissions in medical and dental courses. The Supreme Court, however, later ruled that all aspirants of medical and dental courses across the country will have to sit for NEET.

Infuriated over the decision, parents across the state have been protesting to bring back the state level CET, conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), for which their children had already appeared for.

Meanwhile, Tawde said, “The government of Maharashtra is trying for MHT-CET only. On Monday, Union minister of health JP Nadda has called for a meeting of all ministers of medical education in Delhi. We are going to put our side, that we want our state-level CET, on the table. But if we need to go for NEET, the state government is planning to start coaching for students from May 19, through news channels, Internet, mobile applications, YouTube, and virtual platforms.”

Addressing the media in a press conference, Tawde said coaching will be given for an hour every day through different mediums. Daily, two subjects will be taught for half an hour each. The minister also claimed that they will meet the president to come up with a solution.
