Rajya Sabha Chairman accepts Mallya’s fresh resignation

New Delhi, May 4 ,2016: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha came to an end today with Chairman Hamid Ansari accepting his resignation after he sent a fresh letter under his signature, a day after his scanned offer was rejected on procedural grounds.

Announcing the decision in the House, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said a resignation letter of Mallya dated May 3 was received by the Chairman.

The decision came on a day the Ethics Committee of Rajya Sabha, headed by Congress leader Karan Singh, submitted its report to the Upper House recommending the expulsion of Mallya with immediate effect, rejecting his defence on the matter and dismissing his resignation.

The tenure of Mallya’s second term was scheduled to end on July 1.

Ansari had yesterday declined to accept his resignation as it was observged that the letter did not conform to prescribed procedures and did not bear signature in original.

The Ethics panel also rejected the resignation letter on proceedural grounds in its meeting yesterday while its report today, the panel dismissed Mallya’s defence on the loan default case.

Making the recommendation, the panel said “the Committee hopes that by taking such stern action, a message would reach the general public that parliament is committed to taking such steps as are necessary against erring members to uphold the dignity and prestige of this great institution.
