DUBAI,May 13,2022: United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a pro-Western moderniser who had aligned the Gulf Arab state closer to the United States and its allies, died on Friday at age 73.
The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced the death of Khalifa, who was also ruler of the UAE’s richest emirate, Abu Dhabi, but gave no details.
Khalifa, born in September 1948, had rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2014.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan served as the president of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since November 3, 2004. The Royal was elected to succeed his father, the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the country’s first president since the union in 1971 until he passed away on November 2, 2004.
