New Delhi, June 1, The Union Cabinet on Monday okayed the Prime Minister Street Vendors Atma Nirbhar Nidhi scheme that is expected to benefit more than 50 lakh hawkers.
Briefing the press after the Cabinet meeting, Information & Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said the Union Cabinet approved a credit scheme for street vendors. “It is for the first time since India’s independence
that such a decision has been taken for street and footpath vendors.”
Under the scheme, easier loans for street vendors up to Rs 1,00,00 was announced, explained Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Mr Gadkari said the scheme would include street and footpath vendors and the amount taken could be returned in one year. There is no penal provision in the scheme, he said.
Today’s Cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
