New Delhi, Apr 29, As the news of the demise of versatile actor Irrfan Khan, a veteran of 80 films, broke on Wednesday afternoon, condolences poured in from various quarters.
Terming his demise as a ‘loss’ to the world of cinema and theatre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,
‘He will be remembered for his versatile performances across different mediums. My thoughts are with his family, friends and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.’
Padma Shri awardee Khan, who was born Sahabzada Irfan Ali Khan on January 7, 1967, in Rajasthan’s Tonk village, died at the age of 53 in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he was under observation for colon infection, his representatives said.
The National School of Drama alumni had been battling the neuroendocrine tumour since 2018. He is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and sons Babil and Ayan Khan.
Cutting across party lines, Union ministers, leaders of the ruling BJP as well as leaders of the opposition parties like Congress and Aam Aadmi party expressed their condolences on the death of Irrfan, who had established a niche for himself in the industry.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said, ‘Irfan Khan was a versatile actor. Sorry to hear about his demise. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans. Om Shanti.’
‘Outstanding actor who entertained us for many decades. I am shocked by death of Irrfan, Student and favorite artist of all directors. He had said in his last message, ‘I have some unwanted guests in my body with whom I am talking’, ‘Culture Minister Prahlad Patel said.
Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said,’He etched every character in our memories with sheer talent…How do you mourn his passing away for he breathes in the characters he left behind.’
‘Shocked to hear of the demise of Irrfan Khan, one of the most exceptional actors of our time. May his work always be remembered and his soul rest in peace,’ Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, ‘I’m sorry to hear about the passing of Irrfan Khan. A versatile & talented actor, he was a popular Indian brand ambassador on the global film & tv stage. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends & fans at this time of grief.’
Grieving his death, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said, “I too get the feeling that passing away of #IrrfanKhan seems so personal. Such was his personal aura and charm that people easily connected with him. Your untimely demise is such a heartbreaking news. You will always be our Hero and a legend. Rest in peace.”
