nrcNew Delhi, Feb 3,2020: Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Monday following continuous demands for discussing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) issues by the Opposition Members.

The Upper House witnessed three adjournments amid Opposition’s demand to discuss the both NRC and NPR under Rule 267 before the final adjournment.

Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected the Opposition Members’ notices saying that the Members will get enough opportunity to speak during the Motion of Thanks on President Address.

Soon after the House reconvened at 1500 hrs, the Opposition Members started raising their demand to allow discussion on both issues and some of them trooped into the Well.

Congress lawmakers BK Hariprasad and PL Punia, Hussain Dalwai along with others from Opposition Bench rushed into the Well and started raising slogans.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh tried to initiate the ‘Motion of Thanks’ debate and asked BJP Member Bhupendra Yadav to start the speech.

Amid pandemonium, Mr Yadav tried to speak but was not audible.

Leader of the House Thawar Chand Gehlot also appealed to the Opposition Members through the Chair, to allow the proceedings on ‘Motion of Thanks’ on President’s address.

The Deputy Chairman also tried to pacify the agitated members but his requests went unheeded.

“Let the Motion of Thanks debate start and you can speak on NRC and NPR when your turn comes, please go back to your seat and let the proceedings begin”, he urged.

But the unrelenting Opposition Members kept raising slogans, insisting on their demand to allow the discussion under the Rule 267.

Amid continued ruckus, the Deputy Speaker adjourned the House for the day at 1510 hrs.
