Amaravati, Jan 28,2020: Andhra Pradesh Assembly here on Monday passed the statutory resolution for the abolition of Legislative Council.
The Resolution was passed by 133-0 votes.
Earlier, when the house assembled for the day, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy moved the statutory resolution in the house stating “The Legislative Assembly of AP resolves that the Legislative Council of the State be abolished”.
In the evening, the resolution was passed by 133-0 votes.
Since the Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) boycotted the session today, all the 133 ruling YSRCP MLAs voted in favour of the resolution.
Earlier, Speaker T Sitaram asked two ministers Mopidevi Venkataramana and Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose to sit separately as they are not members in the Assembly.
Mr Sitaram announced that the voting on the statutory resolution, adopted by the House, was passed by two-thirds majority as 133 members voted in favour of the resolution.
Earlier, Mr Reddy speaking on the resolution in the house said abolishing the Legislative Council was to protect the interests of the Sate.
“We feel proud to say that we are going to abolish the Legislative Council. Do we need the elders House ?. We wish that people of the State would bless us for our move to scrap the Legislative Council. The Assembly has the right to abolish the Legislative Council under Article 169.” the Chief Minister said.
He alleged that the opposition TDP is trying to oppose the bills passed in the Assembly. The government spends Rs 60 crore to maintain the Legislative Council, he informed the house.
Mr Reddy cited that only six States have Legislative Councils out of 29 States in the country.
The Chief Minister reiterated that Visakhapatnam would be the executive capital, Kurnool would be the Judicial Capital and Amaravati would be legislative capital of AP.
Later, the Speaker adjourned the house sine die.
