amit shaNew Delhi, Sep 24: In an effort to encourage Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India campaign, Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the 2021 census exercise will be carried out digitally.

“The process of a ‘Pen-Paper Census’ would be transformed to a ‘Digital Census’ in the 2021 Census exercise by using the latest technology,” Mr Shah said after laying the foundation stone of a new building of the Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner here.

“Census data will be collected through a mobile app. This is for the first time that the mobile app will be used for the census exercise. India will be moving from the pen and paper census to digital data, which will be a big revolution in the country’s census exercise,” the home minister added.

The government would spend Rs 12,000 crore to carry out the nationwide exercise in 16 languages.

Stressing on the importance of people’s participation in the Census process, he said that 130 crore Indians need to be made aware about the importance of Census as it is the foundation for long-term future planning for growth and development in the country.

The minister expressed satisfaction that 2011 census also brought out good news that literacy rate in India increased to 74 per cent and that India is a ‘Young Nation’.
