San Juan, Jul 25 : Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello on Wednesday said that he would step down on August 2 amid public anger over obscenity-laced online chats involving him and his aides.
According to the Guardian, a crowd of demonstrators outside the governor’s mansion in Old San Juan erupted into cheers and singing after the governor announced his resignation on Facebook Live just before midnight.
“The demands have been overwhelming and I’ve received them with highest degree of humility,” the news paper quoted him as saying.
The island’s Secretary of Justice Wanda Vazquez will replace him.
Mr Rossello, 40, will become the first governor to quit in the modern history of Puerto Rico.
Earlier on Monday, thousands of protesters took to the streets here in the capital city of Puerto Rico, shutting down a major highway and paralysing much of the city demanding the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rossello.
The protests came a day after the governor refused to resign over a leaked online chat in which he and top aides exchanged obscenity-laced messages.
