New Delhi, Jun 18: BJP Parliamentary Board, party’s highest policy making body, on Monday selected former Union Minister and a known RSS confidant J P Nadda as working president of the party but allowed incumbent president Amit Shah to continue as regular party chief till December, the saffron party announced here.
This is for the first time party appointed a working president.
“Humble and affable, he is widely respected across the BJP family,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted complimenting Mr Nadda, who served as Union Health and Family Welfare Minister in the previous regime.
In a way BJP chief and Home Minister Amit Shah hinted that perhaps the leadership baton could be later passed on to Mr Nadda.
“I am confident that under Naddaji’s leadership, party will continue to be strengthened further. We will sincerely work to implement Modi government’s welfare measures and work according to party’s principles,” Mr Shah tweeted in Hindi.
“I am confident that under the leadership of Amit Shah and J PNadda, and powered by the hardwork of our Karyakartas, the BJP will continue winning people’s trust and serving our society. We remain committed to building a strong, developed and inclusive India,” Mr Modi exuded confidence.
“Shri JP Nadda is a diligent Karyakarta of the Party, who has risen through the ranks due to his hardwork and organisational skills…. Congratulations to him on becoming the Working President of the Party,” Prime Minister wrote.
“BJP Parliamentary board met today and it has selected Shri JP Nadda as the working president. He will remain the working president till the BJP’s membership drive and organisational elections are over,” tweeted Defence Minister Singh.
‘Amit Shah has carried out his responsibility for worked for five years and BJP won several elections under his leadership. But since Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed him Home Minister, Amit Shah Ji himself said the responsibility of party president should be given to someone else,’ told reporters after party parliamentary board meeting here.
The meeting also attended by the Prime Minister, took the decision in view of coming elections in three states — Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand due later this year.
Mr Shah’s tenure as BJP chief in December 2019 and as he joined the cabinet, he may not be getting an extension.
The organisational elections in BJP would be over by January 2020.
A three-time MLA, Mr Nadda represents Himachal Pradesh in Rajya Sabha and is known for being a RSS confidant and also someone who enjoys the confidence of both PM Modi and party chief Shah.
