Islamabad, Nov 3: Jamiat Ulema Islam-Sami (JUI-S) chief, senior religious scholar and former Senator Maulana Samiul Haq was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Rawalpindi on Friday, news channels reported.
Accordign to media sources, bike-borne assailants opened fire on the vehicle of the JUI-S chief when he was returning from a private housing society.
The intense gunfire also reportedly killed Haq’s driver and guard, sources added.
“My father could not join the protest in Islamabad due to road blockage and returned to his house for rest. His drive went out for half an hour and when he returned, he found Maulana lying in a pool of blood,” Maulana Hami ul Haq, son of Maulana Sami ul Haq, said while confirming his father’s assassination.
Maulana had recently been aligned with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.
The JUI-S chief was the chancellor of Dar ul Uloom Haqqania based in Peshawar.
Maulana Sami ul Haq was member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.
