The Supreme Court today ordered the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete its enquiry against CBI director Alok Verma in two weeks under court monitoring and asked interim director M Nageswara Rao to refrain from taking any policy decisions.

Rao will only take routine administrative decisions. A three judge bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi also issued formal notices asking the government, the CBI and the CVC to place their stands before the top court.
Verma’s plea stated that the CBI director is appointed by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition and has a fixed tenure of two years and he can’t be transferred or removed without the consent of this committee.

Verma also raised the issue of several officers investigating sensitive cases have been changed.

Both Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana were asked by the government to proceed on leave and Joint Director M Nageswara Rao was asked to officiate as interim Director of the CBI.
