New York, Sep 26: United States President Donald Trump lauded India’s efforts in fighting poverty while addressing the 73rd session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) here on Tuesday.
He said precisely, “India is trying its best to lift countless people from the clutches of poverty.” His statement came in the wake of the 2018 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report that stated that over 270 million people in India i.e. about half of the population have moved out of poverty since the decade 2005-2006 in over 10-year period.
The index report was released by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHDI).
While speaking on US trade tiff with China, he said, “Trade should be fair and reciprocal. Therefore, we will not allow our wealth to be plundered and transferred.” In a strong message to China he further said that US will not return to Human Rights Council till China has not reformed its trade regulations.
He took a dig at Iran, said that Iranians are outraged at embezzlement of funds. He urged other countries to isolate Iran as well. “We cannot allow the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism to possess the planet’s most dangerous weapons,” Trump said, citing Iran’s “threatening Israel with annihilation” and chants of “death to America.”
The US President has also expressed hopes for a better relation with North Korea.
