Conrad SangmaShillong, Aug2: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that it was inappropriate for any non-governmental agency to involve themselves in checking of suspected illegal immigrants entering the state following the publication of the National Register Citizens in Assam.

KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said that the checking conducted by members of the union on national highways in three places – Ratacherra in East Jaiñtia Hills district, Athiabari in West Khasi Hills district and 20th Miles in Ri-Bhoi district led to the detection of around 1,500 persons.

The NRC published in Assam on Monday showed that over 40 lakh people in the state failed to make it to the draft NRC.

“It is not appropriate for any non governmental agency to involve themselves in this process (checking of people) and if they have anything to add, they should discuss with the government and we will act,” Sangma said.

He said that the government has set up check gates and he is personally monitoring the situation with the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendent of Police of different districts of the state.
