Kathmandu, May 16 : A 48-year-old Nepali mountaineer on Wednesday climbed Mount Everest for a 22nd time, creating a new world record, mountaineering officials said.
Kami Rita Sherpa reached the 8,850-metre summit via the Southeast Ridge route at 8:30 am.
He was scheduled to climb the world’s tallest peak on Thursday, but he achieved the feat on Wednesday.
Kami made his first ascent of Everest in 1994 when he was 24 years old. One of his 21 Everest ascents was made from the Chinese side in 2016.
Sherpa succeeded to break the record of 21 ascents of Everest set by Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa, both of whom have retired.
