The Indian women’s hockey team clinched the Asia Cup 2017 on Sunday after beating China 5-4 in sudden death after the match ended 1-1 at the end of normal time. With this win, the team qualified for next year’s Hockey World Cup. The Indian team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. India had earlier beaten World No.8 China 4-1 in the pool stage. India’s Navjot Kaur broke the deadlock in the 25th minute to give India the lead but China’s Tiantian Luo leveled the score in the 47th minute.
Kaur finished the tournament with five goals to her name. With 28 goals in the tournament, India’s forward line showed their attacking prowess and will hope to continue their goal threat in the upcoming tournaments.
The triumph of the Indian women’s team follows the Asia Cup victory of the men’s side last month. India had to wait long for their second Women’s Asia Cup title with the last one coming way back in 2004 when they had beaten Japan in New Delhi for the trophy. South Korea secured third place with a 1-0 win over Japan earlier in the day.
