The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition asking for direction to ban websites displaying jokes on the Sikh community. Petitioner Harvinder Chowdhury in his Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has requested the court to issue an order banning all websites which spread jokes portraying the ‘sardar’ community as ‘persons of low intellect, stupid and foolish’.
The petitioner claimed that those ‘Santa Banta jokes’ are hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community and so there is the need to ban those sites. There are such nearly five thousand websites.
