IIT Madras tops NIRF Rankings 2020 again; JNU second among universities

iitNew Delhi, Jun 11, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has retained its top position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2020 for the second year in a row followed by Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and IIT Delhi which was placed third in the overall category.
Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ released the “India Rankings 2020” of Institutions of Higher Education in various categories on the basis of their performance on five broad categories of parameters during a live webcast.
IISc Bangalore, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University have been named the top three universities in India while among Delhi University’s colleges — Miranda College bagged the top spot, followed by Lady Sri Ram College for Women and St Stephen’s College.
Announcing the rankings, the HRD Minister said the “top 100 Intitutes in NIRF India Rankings 2020 would be allowed to offer online degrees” while releasing the the top three ranks for 10 different categories along with the Overall Rankings. Also present at the live webcast were Minister of State Sanjay Dhotre. Additional Secretary (Higher Education) Rakesh Ranjan, MHRD; UGC Chairman, Prof D P Singh; AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe; NBA Chairman, Prof K K Aggarwal; NBA Member Secretary Dr Anil Kumar Nassa witnessed the release through video conferencing.
This is the fifth consecutive edition of India Rankings of the institutions of higher education in India. In 2020, an addition to nine rankings — one domain “Dental” — has been introduced for the first time bringing the total tally to 10 categories/subject domains.
In the law category, NLU Bangalore was at number 1, IIT Kharagpur was the top institute for Architecture followed by IIT Roorkee and IIT Calicut. In Dental College category, MAMC, Delhi was in the top rank, followed by Manipal college of Dental College, Udipi.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that these rankings act as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement. The Ranking of Institutions at national level instill a competitive spirit among institutions to perform better and secure higher rank in international ranking, he added.
